Brock is the Gym Leader of Pewter City. His dream is to become a Pokemon breeder, but he can't leave his home because he has to take care of his ten brothers and sisters. His father had left the family several years before to become a Pokemon trainer, and his mother unfortunately passed away. He now travels with Ash thanks to the fact that his father came back and offered to take care of his family. Quiet and full of ideas, Brock helps Ash to become the greatest Pokemon trainer in the world by offering ideas and Pokemon battle strategies.
Brock prefers Pokemon of the rock element.

Shigeru (Gary)
And of course, every hero has a rival that wants to one-up him every chance he gets. In Pokemon, Gary is the one who wants to be better than Ash. Grandson of Professor Professor Oak, he thinks that since his grandfather's in the Pokemon business he should be the one to claim the title of "greatest Pokemon trainer in the world". He's selfish and egotistical, even having his own group of cheerleaders to root him on in the first episode of the anime.
His role is pretty much the same in the Game Boy games; as your rival, he ends up fighting you at major points in the adventure (including right after you get your first Pokemon), always becoming stronger as your Pokemon advance in level.

It's rare that you get an anime without any bad guys. In Pokemon, the usual pain-in-the-butt is the Team Rocket, whose goal is to capture Pikachu and any other rare Pokemon they can get their hands on. Unfortunately, they're so incompetent that they rarely, if never, succeed in what they're doing. The Team Rocket is composed of James, Jessie, Meowth, and their Pokemon Ekans and Koffing. James and Jessie are the two people you see in the picture to the left; Jessie's the woman, and James's the man. Whenever they show up in the anime, they always make themselves known with their Team speech.
Nurse Joy
Joy is a Pokemon Center nurse who's job is to help hurt and injured Pokemon. However, it seems that she's in every single Pokemon Center in the world... Actually, she has a rather large family and all of her sisters seem to be exactly identical! She's always ready to help whenever a desperate trainer needs his poor Pokemon healed up.
Professor Ookido (Oak)
Professor OOak) is Pallet Town's expert on Pokemon; he is the one who prepares prospective Pokemon trainers to go out into the world, although he can be a little absent-minded at times. He offers encouragement to Ash whenever he can. Ash's rival, Gary, is unfortunately Oak's grandson.
Satoshi's (Ash's) mom
Ash's mom is like most mothers in that she cares for her son very much and encourages him to follow his dreams. Ash's father was also a Pokemon trainer, but his whereabouts are unknown. She's a tad over-protective, but she means well.
Officer Junsa/Jenny
Officer Jenny is who to call on if trouble arises. Like Nurse Joy, she has family scattered around the world of Pokemon who look exactly like her, sound like her, and have the same name. Depending on which Jenny, Ash and his friends encounter, her attitude can range from cheerful to overly suspicious, but she's always helpful to them.

Strategies:
Both of Brock's Pokemon are of the Ground and Rock element; using Fire or Electrical attacks is useless against them, so rely on your Water or Plant Pokemon to dish out the punishment. You should have no trouble beating Geodude, but Onix can be a little tricky since his Defense rating is so high; save your hardest hitters for him and make sure their HP is near maximum throughout the battle, especially when Onix's BIDE attack comes into effect.

Strategies:
Misty may only have two Pokemon, but they're extremely powerful and their power shouldn't be underestimated. Keep any Ground, Rock, Fire and Flying Pokemon away from this battle and hit hard with Plant and Electric Pokemon. Pikachu's definetely an asset here! Staryu shouldn't be a problem, but beware of Starmie's BubbleBeam attack, it can take out even a electric Pokemon. Misty may use a XDEFEND item on her Pokemon during battle.

Raichu, Level 24

|
Strategies:
Lt. Surge uses only electric Pokemon, so your Ground and Rock Pokemon will take them out quickly. If you have the Dig technique equipped on a Pokemon, use it! Voltorb isn't that tough, and the Pikachu can be defeated with a little work, but beware of Raichu in this battle; her Thunderbolt attack can defeat your Pokemon if their levels are too low. Bring some Paralysis Cures/Para-Heals in this battle since many of the electrical attacks can shock your Pokemon numb.

Utsubot (Japanese)/Victreebel (English), Level 29
Monjara (Japanese)/Tangela (English), Level 24
Rafracia (Japanese)/Vileplume (English), Level 29

Strategies:
Erika looks like a sweet, innocent young woman, but don't underestimate her Pokemon. The other trainers in her Gym should give you a good idea what to expect, so if you can't beat them easily, build up your levels and come back later. Keep your Water element Pokemon away from this battle; if you chose Hitokage/Charmander at the beginning of the game, the ease with which you'll defeat Erika's Pokemon will make you happy you went through the suffering earlier on. It should be pretty straightforward to beat Victreebel and Vileplume, but beware of Tanjara's Bind attack; it's very much like Ekans and Arbok's Wrap attack which can leave your Pokemon helpless for up to five rounds. Also, it might be a good idea to bring some curative items to heal the Paralysis, Sleep and Poison attacks Erika's Pokemon might do to yours.

Strategies:
If you managed to capture a few Ghost-type Pokemon in the Lavender Tower, this is the time to use them! Sabrina's Pokemon can be very tough, especially when they use Psybeam, which can take down your Pokemon in one hit if the attack's a critical one. Her Pokemon also use Confusion attacks, so make sure you don't fight with a confused Pokemon unless you feel lucky. The best strategy is to hit hard and fast, bring a lot of Hyper Potions and wish for the best.

|
Strategies:
After having faced Sabrina, Koga might seem like a piece of cake. His Poison-type Pokemon can easily be beaten with Ground and Psychic-type Pokemon, so the TM that Sabrina gave you should help a lot. Dig is also a big help, since there's more chance that the Poison attacks won't hit you. Obviously, bring a lot of Antidotes and/or Full Heals. Watch out for Weezing's Toxic attack! It drains more and more HP out of your Pokemon as the battle progresses.

Strategies:
Toasty! Water-type Pokemon will be a big help against Blaine, especially since all of his Pokemon are of the Fire-type. If you have the Blizzard, Ice Beam or Water Gun TMs, use them! As always, judge yourself on the levels of the other trainers in the Gym; if you can't beat them, then don't even try Blaine until you have no difficulty beating them. Bring some Burn Heals and/or Full Heals to prevent your Pokemn from fainting from the burn damage these Pokemon can inflict on yours.

Strategies:
Giovanni's Pokemon are not an easy bunch to defeat; Water, Grass and Ice-type should help in this battle, but this strategy isn't fool-proof since Nidoqueen and Nidoking are dual-element Pokemon. Watch out for Dugtrio's Dig attack, it can cause a lot of damage to a Pokemon who can't handle it. You'll want to stock up on the nearest place to get them at this point is Gren/Cinnabar and plan your strategy wisely. A Vaporeon with Ice Beam will do wonders against Team Rocket's leader.
